Finally had enough with GIMP crashes and downloaded Krita. So far so good. For now I’m rocking the mouse-based drawings but it does the trick while prototyping to see if this game is actually any fun.

A bit more progress: added corpses left by mobs and scattered around the level. Also added the ability to consume them. Doing so increases biomass and lets you expand into more cells without having to remove old cells. I might get rid of removing old cells altogether.
Also, I’m tracking Cell and Organ separately which I don’t think is necessary. A cell can either be the default, normal cell or it can be a tentacle or a consumer. Combining them’ll make tracking health and hits much easier.
Composition or inheritance for different cell types? I guess I would expect to have enough different types of cells/organs that I may need to share functionality across some but not all of them so composition might actually make sense here.
Also thinking it might make sense to move some of these sprites outside the tile map. Sure, the blob can stay, that makes sense, but the tentacles and mobs should definitely be sprites so I can control their animations and smooth their movements and such.
It’s kind of a different beast doing turn-based on a grid.
